Nectar points the way with rail fares deal

Wednesday 09th April 2014
Family outings can add up, but thanks to First Great Western’s new partnership with Nectar, you could enjoy a free day out just by taking the train.

From today, customers who purchase train tickets online at nectar.com or through firstgreatwestern.co.uk will be able to collect two Nectar points for every £1 they spend.

This will allow regular rail travellers to save up their Nectar points which can then be redeemed for a treat of their choice from cinema tickets and meals out, to a little wallet relief when it comes to the weekly shop.

Since its launch in 2002, Nectar has become the UK’s largest loyalty programme with 19 million customers, and First Great Western’s parent company, FirstGroup, has now become the first UK rail operator to offer customers the opportunity to collect Nectar points.

Regular rail commuters will also be able to collect Nectar points with 2,500 points awarded for annual season tickets, 200 points for monthly passes and 50 points for weekly tickets.

First Great Western’s Managing Director Mark Hopwood said:
“We are committed to the communities we serve and this partnership with Nectar enables us to reward loyal customers by giving them something extra when they book tickets with us online.

The benefits of Nectar points are well known and we’re delighted to be the first UK rail company offering rewards for our passengers.”

Nectar points can be spent on Vue cinema tickets, a meal at Pizza Express and a day out with the family at Merlin Entertainments attractions to name just a few. To find a full list of places to spend Nectar points, go to www.nectar.com/spend.points.

Will Shuckburgh, Nectar Managing Director said; “At Nectar, we’re committed to looking at new ways for our 19 million cardholders to collect points on their everyday spending. As rail is a key mode of transport in the UK, the partnership with FirstGroup is a great addition to the Nectar portfolio, providing another avenue for our customers to get more for their money.

Customers who buy train tickets online will be able to simply link their details with a Nectar card account to start collecting points. In addition, customers will receive a bonus 100 Nectar points for linking their accounts. From 14 April to 23 April the amount of points customers collect will be doubled.

First Great Western customers who do not have a Nectar card can apply for one via the Nectar website or by picking up a registration pack at any Sainsbury’s or Homebase store.
