Bristol depot takes top rail award

Monday 06th February 2017

St Philips Marsh Depot in Bristol has been recognised in the GWR Excellence Awards for their contribution to the community.

Awarded in the Keeping our Communities Prospering category, the depot raised over £20,000 for local charity Springboard last Summer when they opened their doors to the general public in celebration of 40 years of the High Speed train.

More than 5,000 people took the opportunity to visit the depot, the incredible work of the GWR engineering teams, and a never seen before collection of Class 43 Locomotives from Virgin East Coast, Network Rail, Grand Central, East Midlands Trains, and of course GWR.

Dan Panes, Head of External Communications: “To bring together an event of such size needed an awesome team who successfully met all the challenges put before them; and in so doing raising a staggering amount for a local charity.”

The 2017 GWR Excellence Awards were held last Friday [3 February] at the Bristol Marriott to celebrate GWR staff who go above and beyond in their roles, and for inspiring others in sometimes trying circumstances.

Also picking up an award was the Hinksey Major Possession Team, who managed the challenging 16-day closure of the railway in Oxfordshire, while at the same time keeping passengers moving into London, the Cotswolds, to the Wilderness Music Festival and to Countryfile Live at Bleinham Palace.

A total of 19 GWR awards were presented to staff from 161 individual and over 50 team submissions.
