Upgrading the railway in the Bristol area

Upgrade work is planned by Network Rail to further improve the reliability and performance of train services across the network.

This will support an increase in long-distance services between London and the West of England as well as additional trains via Bristol Temple Meads and Bath Spa from December.

Bristol Temple Meads to Weston-super-Mare or Taunton

Network Rail plans to upgrade the railway between Bristol Temple Meads and Taunton at weekends in September and October.

Track renewal work will be happening on the lines between Parson Street and Nailsea & Backwell and bridge maintenance work will be taking place at Worle, Weston-super-Mare and Highbridge & Burnham.

As a result, buses/coaches will replace trains between Bristol Temple Meads, Weston-super-Mare and Taunton on the following dates:

  • Weekend of 28/29 September
  • Sunday 6 October
  • Sunday 13 October
CrossCountry trains between Bristol Temple Meads and Taunton will be diverted via an alternative route, adding up to an hour to the normal journey time.

Bristol Temple Meads to Bristol Parkway

Work to upgrade signalling between Bristol Parkway and Filton Abbey Wood is due to take place at weekends in October and November.

As a result, buses/coaches will replace train services via Bristol Parkway or Filton Abbey Wood and along the Severn Beach line on the weekend of 26/27 October.

Trains between London Paddington and South Wales will be diverted between Swindon and Newport, extending normal journey times by around 45 minutes.

Further work is due to take place on Sunday 3 November with buses replacing trains between Bristol Temple Meads and Bristol Parkway or Severn Beach.

CrossCountry trains between Cheltenham Spa and Bristol Temple Meads will be diverted via an alternative route on both weekends, adding up to an hour to the normal journey time.
