Upgrading the railway in the Bristol and Bath area

Upgrade work is planned by Network Rail to further improve the reliability and performance of train services across the network.

This will support an increase in long-distance services between London and the West of England as well as additional trains via Bristol Temple Meads and Bath Spa from December.

Sundays 23 June and 7 July

Signalling upgrades will affect all train services to/from Bath Spa and Chippenham.

Trains between London Paddington and Bristol Temple Meads will be diverted via an alternate route on both dates and won’t call at Chippenham or Bath Spa.

Connecting coaches will replace trains between:

  • Bath Spa and Bristol Temple Meads
  • Bath Spa and Swindon
  • Bath Spa and Westbury or Frome
  • Chippenham and Westbury (via Melksham)
  • Bristol Temple Meads and Clifton Down/Severn Beach (Sunday 7 July only)

Bristol Temple Meads to Severn Beach

Further work is due to take place to upgrade the railway between St Andrews Road and Severn Beach stations at weekends.

As a result, buses will replace trains between Clifton Down and Avonmouth or Severn Beach on the following dates:

  • Sunday 28 July
  • Sunday 4 August

Bristol Parkway to Cardiff Central

Work will also be taking place to electrify the line through to Cardiff Central on various weekends until October.
