Upgrading the railway near Oxford

Saturday 22 – Sunday 30 July 2017

Network Rail will be carrying out improvements between Banbury, Oxford and Didcot Parkway, reducing the potential for delays in the area.

Changes to trains

Oxford to Reading and London Paddington 
Replacement buses will run between Oxford and Didcot Parkway.

If you are travelling between Oxford and London, you should use Chiltern Railways services to London Marylebone. All tickets will be valid, except those which are for travel on GWR trains only.

Oxford to Banbury
Replacement buses will run from Saturday 22 to Friday 28 July, and then again on Sunday 30 July. The line is open on Saturday 29 July. 

Chiltern Railways services between Banbury and London Marylebone will run from Monday 24 to Saturday 29 July.

Oxford to Worcester
Trains will be shorter than normal, and there will be no First Class accommodation or café service. Shipton, Ascott-under-Wychwood, Finstock and Combe will be served by replacement buses.

CrossCountry services
On Saturday 29 July, trains from the north will terminate at Oxford. On all other days, they will terminate at Banbury.

Trains from the south terminate at Didcot Parkway on all days.

Car Parking changes

Some spaces in Becket Street car park will be unavailable from 20:00 on Wednesday 19 July until 12:00 on Monday 31 July to allow for the replacements buses.

Didcot Parkway 
There will be a limited number spaces available due to the building of the new multi-storey car park.

Travelling with a bike

The normal cycle policy for all train companies will apply.

Between Oxford and London
Customers should use Chiltern trains to and from London Marylebone. There are two spaces on each train, which are first-come, first-served.

Between Oxford and Worcester
There are two spaces on each train which are first-come, first-served.

Between Worcester and London Paddington (limited service)
Up to six bikes can be carried on-board, and reservations are required as normal.

  • 35 - Abingdon via Radley station – from St Aldates (H3)
  • X2 - Wallingford via Abingdon and Didcot – from St Aldates (H1)
  • X32 - Didcot and Harwell IBC – from St Aldates (H5)
  • X32 - Harwell Campus – from St Aldates (H5)
  • X39 - Reading via Wallingford – from St Aldates (H5)
  • 25A - The Heyfords – from Magdalen St. (C4)
Oxford station
  • 400 - Seacourt Park & Ride – from Frideswide Square (F2)
Radley station
  • 35 - Oxford City Centre – from Church Rd.
Didcot station
  • X2, X32 - Oxford City Centre – from the railway station (R1)
We can only carry folding bikes on replacement buses.
