Train of thought: Alex Horne

Comedian Alex Horne has been spending a lot of time in the bathroom. But no more than the rest of us, he points out. ‘I read a while ago that the average man spends seven years in the bathroom,’ Alex explains. ‘It’s one of those statistics you read and just dismiss – but it was enough to get me thinking that there was probably a comedy show in that sort of thing.’

“I had to do everything we do in our lives, so I got dressed at one point in the show and I went to sleep for a third of the show. Everything that happens in life I tried to do.”

That Horne was able to dedicate a show to compressing an entire human life into one hour shows he is not your average comedian. Among the tours that have pulled in the crowds was his run titled Seven Years in the Bathroom, which saw Horne microwave a burger, have his portrait painted and take to the stage in a dressing gown for the first time. ‘I had to do everything we do in our lives,’ he says. ‘So, I got dressed at one point in the show and I went to sleep for a third of the show. Everything that happens in life I tried to do.’

As a touring comedian, Horne travels extensively and likes nothing more than visiting the south west, especially during his downtime. 

‘My favourite place in the south west is Dawlish near Exeter,’ he says. ‘The train line there goes right on the coast, almost on the edge of the cliff. That’s probably been my favourite train journey – but they do really good bacon sandwiches there, and I was more interested in the bacon sandwiches, if I’m honest.’
