Everything you need to know about taking your bike on our trains including how to reserve a space which is compulsory on our Intercity Express Train high-speed services and highly recommended whenever the option is available on other services.
How to reserve a space
Reserve your bike space:

You can reserve a bike space, at the station or over the phone, at any time before your train arrives. You should do this as early as you can. Storage is limited and bikes can't be kept in the areas by the doors.
Folding bikes with a maximum 20-inch wheel can be carried as luggage without any restriction. Please make sure you fold it before boarding.
We can’t accept bikes on replacement buses so check for engineering work before you travel.
When you’re at the station
You should be on the platform at least 5 minutes before your train is due to leave
Our station staff or train manager will let you know where the bike carriage will stop as will some of our information screens
Remember, cycling isn’t allowed anywhere in the station
Taking your bike on Intercity Express Trains
Reservations for bikes are mandatory on all our Intercity Express Trains and you must have evidence of your reservation with you when you travel.
How to store your bike on an IET:
5 car - storage is in Carriage B
10 car – storage is in Carriages B and H
9 car – storage is in Carriages B and J
Read the instruction posters in the cycle space area. Secure your bike by hooking it onto the metal hoops provided.
Local services in the London & Thames Valley area
There is space for 2 full-size bikes in each train (some services are made up of more than one train).
Reservations can’t be made on our local services and the following peak time restrictions apply Monday to Friday; excluding public holidays when bikes aren’t allowed on services:
arriving at London Paddington between 07:45 and 09:45
leaving London Paddington between 16:30 and 19:00
between Wokingham and Reading on services arriving at Reading between 07:45 and 09:45 and leaving Reading between 16:30 and 19:00
Local services in the West Country
Includes local services in Devon & Cornwall, Somerset, Bristol, the Cotswolds and between the South Coast and Wales.
You can reserve a bike space on a limited number of these services. If you do not hold a reservation, bikes are carried on a first come, first served basis.
On most trains there's space for 2 full size bikes; however, some trains may have more room available. A bike symbol next to the exterior door will show you where to put your bike.
Some of our local services are operated by our ‘Castle Class’ trains. These have a dedicated cycle storage area at one end of the train in Carriage A. Please ask the train Conductor or station staff if you need any help.
Taking your bike on the sleeper
Reservations for bikes are mandatory on Night Riviera Sleeper services and you must have evidence of your reservation with you when you travel.
bike storage is in Carriage A in the same carriage as the standard seating area. Secure your bike with the strap provided, but don’t lock it up.
tell the Train Manager your destination.
remind them when your stop is coming up and they’ll make sure you can leave the train safely.
