Port Meadow
Also known as ‘Oxford’s oldest monument’, Port Meadow is one of those rare places that has barely changed over the course of its history. Since pre-historic times, the landscape has remained open for horses and cattle to graze on.
The meadow itself has never been ploughed and as such contains well-preserved archaeological remains. Picnic benches and BBQ equipment is available near the Godstow Road entrance, so for those looking to pack a punch with their lunch, Port Meadow is the perfect place.
The Oxford University Parks
This green oasis located in the heart of the city is the perfect setting for a homemade picnic. From the natural beauty of its flora and fauna, which changes throughout the seasons, to its ponds and sporting field areas, University Parks has so much to offer visitors. Take a walk next to the riverside before settling down for a meal near the Rainbow Bridge.
Depending on the time of year, you may be able to catch a game of cricket, lacrosse, tennis, football or rugby. Harry Potter fans may even come across a game of Quidditch in play…
Harcourt Arboretum
Owned and run by the University of Oxford, this magnificent site contains the best collection of trees in Oxfordshire, with some of the oldest redwoods in the UK.

With 130 acres of green space on offer, there are many sites for you to sit down with friends and family for a delicious picnic. If you’re lucky, you may even get to see one of the garden’s famous peacocks!
