Why Visit Devon at Christmas?

Devon transforms into a winter wonderland every December, with historic towns glowing under twinkling lights, bustling markets full of handmade gifts, and the sound of choirs filling the air. The best part? You can leave the car at home and enjoy it all by train. With direct connections from London, Bristol, the Midlands and Cornwall, festive Devon is just a ride away.

Totnes Christmas Markets & Lights

The quirky town of Totnes is famous for its alternative shopping scene, and it goes all out at Christmas. On the first three Tuesdays of December, the Totnes Christmas Markets & Late-Night Shopping transform the high street, with artisan stalls, local produce, live music and street performers. The season begins with the Totnes Christmas Lights Switch-On (26 November 2025), when the town bursts into festive colour. Totnes railway station is just a ten-minute walk from the celebrations, making this one of the easiest festive trips by train.

Plymouth Christmas Market & Barbican Light Switch-On

Down by the coast in Plymouth, the Christmas Market (27 November – 21 December 2025) brings festive cheer to Armada Way, with wooden chalets selling gifts, food and crafts. On 27 November, the Barbican & Sutton Harbour Christmas Lights are officially switched on, creating a magical harbourside glow. Plymouth station is right in the city centre, making this an easy festive day trip by train.

Tavistock Festival & Victorian Lights

Step back in time in Tavistock at the Christmas Festival & Market (7 December 2025). Expect a Victorian atmosphere, with traditional costumes, festive stalls, and a magical Christmas Lights Switch-On on 5 December in Bedford Square. Tavistock is easily reached by bus from Plymouth station, a perfect pairing for a festive weekend break.

Teignmouth & Dawlish by the Sea

For seaside sparkle, head to Teignmouth Christmas Market (22 November 2025) or enjoy the festive fun at the Dawlish Christmas Light Switch-On (29 November 2025). Both towns are directly on the scenic Riviera railway line, making them some of the most picturesque festive destinations to reach by train.

Clovelly Harbour Lights & Carols

Few places capture Christmas spirit like Clovelly, the timeless fishing village with cobbled streets and a harbour that feels like it’s from a storybook. On 30 November 2025, the village hosts its Christmas Lights Switch-On with a brass band, lantern procession, carol singing and even fireworks over the sea. The nearest train station is Barnstaple, from where you can catch a local bus to the village. It’s well worth the journey for a truly unique and magical Christmas experience.
