Pull on your wellies and head for a brisk walk in Wiltshire this autumn. Stourhead Gardens – home to almost 1,000 varieties of trees – looks particularly colourful at this time of year. And you can always warm up in one of the region’s many pubs, cafes or restaurants afterwards.
With prehistoric sites, such as Stonehenge and Avebury, the medieval city of Salisbury and picturesque market towns, Wiltshire has a rich history. There’s also a strong cultural scene with arts venues, festivals and some great traditions, such as Morris dancing.
Take the the Tower Tour at Salisbury Cathedral for breathtaking views of the city, or explore Bradford on Avon. Hop on a barge along the Kennet and Avon Canal, or take the family to the wild animal park and country house of Longleat Adventure and Safari Park.
Wiltshire has a proud reputation for food with Michelin Starred restaurants – like the Red Lion Freehouse in East Chisenbury – local farmers’ markets and some great food festivals. If you enjoy a pint, a visit to the Wadworth Brewery in Devizes is a must.
Swindon is the region’s main sporting town – with speedway, ice skating and Swindon Town FC. The Kennet and Avon Canal, which crosses the county is perfect for water-based activities and hosts the annual Devizes to Westminster canoe race. You’ll also find a good choice of golf courses.
Swindon and Salisbury are your best bets for clubbing and nightlife. But, you’ll also find lots of live music and festivals in local pubs across Wiltshire throughout the year.
You’ll find a good selection of shops in Wiltshire’s market towns. Grab a bargain at the Swindon Designer Outlet, or enjoy the riverside setting of the Wilton Shopping Village.
