Network Rail has been upgrading the track west of Gloucester station to improve the punctuality of train services in the area with enhanced performance and reliability.

This upgrade also supports Great Western Railway’s plans for more Intercity Express Trains to run direct between Gloucestershire and London.

These trains provide our customers with more seats and faster journeys. Look out for the new hourly services in the timetable from 15 December onwards.

Most of the track upgrade was successfully completed back in July but further work is planned during August and September.

This will be done overnight when train services are not running but some services will be affected by work on one Sunday in September.

Sunday 8 September

A limited train service will operate between Gloucester and Cheltenham Spa, Swindon or Bristol Temple Meads.

Trains between London Paddington and Cheltenham Spa will not call at Gloucester.

Transport for Wales services from Maesteg or Cardiff Central to Cheltenham Spa will terminate at Lydney – replacement buses will operate to Gloucester.

CrossCountry services from Nottingham to Cardiff Central will terminate at Gloucester – replacement buses will run to Newport for trains to Cardiff Central.

Please note only the far end of Platform 1 at Gloucester station will be in use on these dates, so allow plenty of time to catch your train.

Connecting coaches will operate between the following locations:

  • Gloucester and Cheltenham Spa
  • Gloucester and Lydney
  • Gloucester and Newport

Car Parking

Parking at Cheltenham Spa station will be very limited during 2019 due to ongoing redevelopment work, expected to be completed in the autumn.
