Upgrade work is planned in the Gloucester area to further improve reliability and the performance of train services. Most of the engineering work by Network Rail will take place at weekends. However, some work will affect weekday train services. 

July

Sunday 21 and Monday 22 July


Trains will be unable to call at Gloucester.

Trains from London Paddington or Swindon will run non-stop between Stonehouse and Cheltenham Spa.

Trains from Bristol Temple Meads to Worcester will run non-stop between Cam & Dursley and Cheltenham Spa.

Trains from Bristol Temple Meads to Gloucester will terminate at Cam & Dursley – replacement buses will run to Gloucester. 

Transport for Wales services from Maesteg to Gloucester or Cheltenham Spa:

  • Sunday 21 July, trains terminate at Newport for buses to Gloucester
  • Monday 22 July, trains terminate at Lydney for buses to Gloucester
CrossCountry trains from Nottingham to Cardiff Central will terminate at Cheltenham Spa – replacement buses will run to Newport for trains to Cardiff Central. 

Connecting coaches will operate between the following locations:

  • Gloucester and Cheltenham Spa
  • Gloucester and Cam & Dursley
  • Cheltenham Spa, Gloucester and Lydney
  • Cheltenham Spa, Gloucester and Newport

Tuesday 23 to Friday 26 July

A limited train service will operate at Gloucester, but no trains will call there after 22:00.

Trains between London Paddington and Cheltenham Spa will not call at Gloucester.

Trains from Swindon, Cheltenham Spa or Bristol will call at Gloucester but will run to an amended timetable – so please check before you travel.

Transport for Wales services from Maesteg to Gloucester or Cheltenham Spa will terminate at Lydney – replacement buses will operate to Gloucester.

CrossCountry services from Nottingham to Cardiff Central will terminate at Gloucester – replacement buses will run to Newport for trains to Cardiff Central.

Please note only the far end of Platform 1 at Gloucester station will be in use on these dates, so allow plenty of time to catch your train.

Connecting coaches will operate between the following locations:

  • Gloucester and Cheltenham Spa
  • Cheltenham Spa, Gloucester and Lydney
  • Gloucester and Newport

Car parking

Parking at Cheltenham Spa station will be very limited during 2019 due to ongoing redevelopment work, expected to be completed in the autumn.

However, the station car park at Cheltenham Spa will be closed completely from 20:00 on Friday 19 July until 23:59 on Saturday 27 July.

During this time the main car park at Gloucester station will also be closed but the overflow car park on Great Western Road will remain open.

You can use your APCOA parking permit for either Cheltenham Spa or Gloucester stations in the overflow car parks at Gloucester or Kemble station.

Looking ahead

Follow-up engineering work is planned affecting train services to/from Gloucester on Sunday 8 September.

During this period, only Platform 1 will be available for train services between

Gloucester and Cheltenham Spa, Swindon or Bristol.

Trains between London Paddington and Cheltenham Spa will not call at Gloucester.

Transport for Wales trains from Maesteg to Gloucester or Cheltenham Spa will terminate at Lydney.

CrossCountry trains from Nottingham to Cardiff Central will terminate at Gloucester.

Alternative travel arrangements will be in place to help you make your journey.

Replacement road transport will operate between Cheltenham Spa, Gloucester, Lydney and Newport.
