Best British fish and chips

It’s one of the nation’s favourite meals so let’s celebrate the humble fish and chips this summer. Whether you’re by the sea or in the city, here are some of the best places to feast on this British classic.

Fish ‘n’ Fritz

Weymouth
Fish ‘n’ Fritz is a cracking 48-seater fish and chip restaurant offering a mouth-watering menu of classic dishes for dine-in and takeaway customers. Set back from the beautiful 17th Century Weymouth Harbour, this chippy is a must-visit if you’re in the area.

It serves all the good stuff: cod, haddock, plaice, roe, scampi, chips and vats of curry sauce. Fish and Fritz goes above and beyond with their menu, offering classic seaside dishes with a twist such as their mackerel bap and tiger prawns in an oriental style pastry.

Those with special dietary requirements can still indulge as this fish and chip eatery offers gluten free and vegetarian options. The portion sizes are top notch too.

Kerbisher & Malt

London
When it comes to creating the perfect plate of fish and chips, Kerbisher & Malt’s motto is ‘simple, fresh and tasty’. With some of the food industry’s finest giving K&M the seal of approval (‘Takes the very essence of a chippy and just makes it so much better’– Heston Blumenthal), Londoners need to make this great British fish and chip shop their next pit stop. There are two London K&M locations – one in Brook Green and one in Clapham.

Kerbisher & Malt only use fresh fish from sustainable sources; they peel and cut their own chips, using potatoes from local farmers; they make all of their own sauces (apart from the ketchup); and they even brew their own beer, the Kerbisher Pale Ale.

Their menu hosts all of the traditional British seaside classics and more. Try something different like the salt and pepper calamari with lime and fresh chilli or the fish bites with a whopping portion of chips. The chip butty, though simple, is not to be sniffed at. And make sure to give the sauces a go – the chipotle mayonnaise and red curry sauce are both especially good.

The Old Lifeboat House Bistro

Penzance
This exceptional seafood restaurant offers delicious food with a view, located in an old lifeboat house in Penzance. Open all day and serving up a feast of daily seafood specials, this fish restaurant is a romantic local bistro, not a fast food fish and chippy.

Sure, it sounds fancy but this lovely local gaff still serves fish and chips by the bucket load. The batter is light and the chips are thick and crispy. Sound good? That’s just the tip of the iceberg. The seafood sharing platter (crayfish tails, crab, anchovies, smoked salmon, bread and tartare sauce) and the fish pie (tiger prawns, smoked haddock and salmon topped with potatoes and cheese) will have you returning to this gem of a place again and again.

Dorothy’s

Cardiff
It may not be the prettiest fish and chip shop but rest assured Dorothy’s in Cardiff is legendary. Located on Caroline Street, otherwise known as Chip Alley or Chippy Lane, Dorothy’s has a reputation for enticing late night partygoers through its doors for a big bag of chips and more.

This independent eatery is everything you’d expect from café and fish bar – a fast food service with tables for hungry diners who can’t wait to dig into their dinner.

Bankers

Brighton
This family-run business has been working hard to perfect the taste of the classic British dish since the 1920s. Winners of the Fish and Chip Chain of the Year Award 2016, Bankers offers both dine-in and takeaway options at their stores.

There are three stores to visit, one in Brighton, one in Hove and one on Hangleton Road.

They sell everything from your traditional cod and chips to ‘out there’ dishes, including a swordfish steak, mackerel paté, pan-fried prawns, freshly-baked pies, spit-roasted chicken and lots more.
