Fun things to do in Truro

Britain’s southernmost city might be small, but it packs a punch. With stunning Georgian architecture and a thriving foodie culture, it’s the perfect place to hang out on a trip to Cornwall.

Truro, the southernmost city in mainland Great Britain, is the beating heart of Cornwall.

Its skyline is dominated by its awe-inspiring Gothic-revival cathedral, designed by John Loughborough Pearson, the tallest spire of which rises an impressive 249 ft above the ground. This iconic structure took thirty years to build and was only completed in 1910.

Truro also features plenty more elegant buildings, including some of the best Georgian architecture in the west of England.

But it’s not all stuffy history and old buildings. Truro is an up-and-coming foodie destination, packed with independent cafes, and is quickly making a name for itself as a vibrant cultural hotspot.

What to see

The Royal Cornwall Museum has Cornish heritage proudly on display, alongside a permanent Ancient Egypt exhibition and ceramics on loan from the V&A.

Where to hang out

Head over to the Lemon Street Market for dozens of independent and artisan shops and cafes, with a fantastic selection of food, drink, clothes and local crafts, plus a display of Cornish art.

Where to eat

Hooked! Restaurant and Bar is right in the centre of Truro and offers excellent seafood in a funky, laid-back setting.

Where to stay

The Bay Tree is a colourful B&B located in a traditional Georgian house just five minutes’ walk from the train station. It’s also had the same owner, Ann, for the last twenty-five years.
