Top five spots for an al fresco feast

Eating outdoors this summer doesn’t have to mean packing your own picnic. Enjoy cheap rail fares to a number of destinations on our network and we’ll tempt you with the country’s best outdoor eateries…

1 Caravan – a capital place to eat

London has no shortage of great eateries but we love this restaurant, bar and coffee roastery. Its name may sound less than trendy, but Caravan is located at the hip Exmouth Market, in Farringdon, London. We’re fans of its laid-back atmosphere and large terrace.

2 The Terrace – sheer heaven

Tucked away on a cliff face of the Plymouth Hoe, the Terrace lets you enjoy one of the city’s best views while indulging in a full English breakfast, relaxed lunch or special dinner. It’s on our list of places to spend a warm summer’s evening. Don’t forget, First Great Western passengers can enjoy super savings at attractions across Devon with FGW offers.

3 The Bay – coastal cool

What better way to enjoy Penzance’s stunning shoreline than from The Bay’s brilliant outdoor deck. We particularly like the thought of tucking into south coast scallops while looking over the rooftops of Penzance and the tranquil Mount’s Bay.

4 The Quod – for a scholarly supper

If we were looking for a slick brasserie to round off a day dawdling through Oxford’s famous streets, we’d pick the Quod. You don’t have to be a genius to enjoy its sophisticated menu and if the British Summer does its worst, don’t worry – the terrace is heated.

5 Clerkenwell Kitchen – squids in

Sampling some of the best cuisine London has to offer doesn’t mean forking out a fortune. This popular spot is known for its impressive but affordable daily lunch menu, which often includes roast pheasant, squid or lamb.
