Flippin’ tasty: where to eat awesome pancakes

Savoury or sweet, it’s time to feast on stacks of the nation’s favourite flat cake. Pancake Day is on the horizon and these restaurants are serving up some of the best in town.

Trains to Bristol

Rocotillos, Clifton
Self-described as serving the ‘best’ burgers, pancakes and milkshakes, this American-style diner has a menu bursting with the good-stuff. The homemade pancakes come topped with maple syrup and either ice cream or butter. Choose to eat them plain, with fruit, chocolate chips or even bacon and a fried egg.

Trains to London

Le Petite Bretagne, Hammersmith
Inspired by the owner’s love for his grandmother’s gluten-free galette, this crepe restaurant is as authentic as they come. Serving freshly-cooked crepes made from buckwheat flour (gluten and wheat free), choose from a menu of sweet and savoury options. Choose your topping: cheese and ham; smoked salmon, dill and crème fraiche; salted caramel; and chopped strawberries, whipped cream and almonds. There’s something to suit all tastes.

Southampton Central train station

Stakks Pancake House, Marlands Shopping Centre
All that shopping working up an appetite? Head to Stakks where you can watch the cooks flip the pancakes you order. Build your own ‘stakk’ or choose from one of their signature dishes. The Chocoholic Stakk is particularly indulgent with white or milk chocolate, dulce de leche sauce, whipped cream, marshmallows, Maltesers, crushed flake and Oreo biscuits to boot. Vegan options available.

Swansea Bay train station

The Crepe Vine
Dive into a sumptuous plate full of sweet or savoury crepes at this independent creperie in the heart of the city. For those who fancy something savoury with a twist, the chicken tikka crepe offers a real kick. Vegetarians will also enjoy the many options available from classic crepe dishes to homemade dishes including the ‘Nile Cruise’ – baked falafel, hummus, sun dried tomatoes and topped with griddled halloumi cheese.

Trains to Bath

The Cosy Club, city centre
The triple-stacked buttermilk pancakes are heaven-sent at this quirky venue. Topped with a berry compote, banana and crème fraiche or smoked streaky bacon and maple syrup. Yum!

Gloucester train station

Hubble Bubble Coffee House, city centre
An enormous double pancake stack served with a fruit compote is the perfect excuse to ditch the New Year diet. While you’re at it, grab a friend to help you share this deliciously fruity pancake offering – we’re sure you’ll encounter little resistance.
